PRESENTATION OF “TKUMA” INSTITUTE PUBLICATIONS  IN COOPERATION WITH THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND SCIENCE OF UKRAINE

On November 3, 2015 "Tkuma" Institute conducted the seminar for History teachers of Petrykivsky District of Dnipropetrovsk region. Dr Igor Shchupak, "Tkuma"  Institute and Museum Director, held session devoted to methods of teaching history, including World War II and the Holocaust history, during today's war against Ukraine. New textbook on the history of the Middle Ages for seventh form pupils and multimedia version of the World History textbook for eleventh form pupils were presented.

The program of the event included guided tour around Museum "Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine" conducted by Dilfuza Hlushchenko, Head of Research Department. She drew attantion to the educational potential of exhibitions and shared "Tkuma" Institute idead in the sphere of museum lessons.

On October 29, regular pedagogical seminar, organized by "Tkuma" Institute and Dnipropetrovsk Regional Institute of Advances Teacher Training, was conducted. Teachers of Dnipropetrovsk secondary schools became the participants of the event.

On October 20-27 on the base of Yad Vashem International School (Israel)  International Seminar on the Holocaust History for Ukrainian Educators was conducted. Participants had a opportunity to communicate not only with Yad Vashem School staff, but also with well-known Israeli scholars. Among the lecturers there were Dr Aharon Weiss, Dr Ilya Lurie, Dr Shimon Redlich, Dr Aron Shneyer, Dr Mordechai Yushkovsky та інші.

On September 29 – October 1, 2015 in Chernivtsi “Tkuma” Institute in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine conducted All-Ukrainian Pedagogical Seminar on teaching multicultural and regional aspects of World War II and the Holocaust history in secondary schools in 2015-2016 academic year.

30 teachers from all over Ukraine came to Chernivtsi to discuss these important and topical issues of history teaching and to share their own experience with colleagues.

After the grand opening, series of sessions of seminar participants was held. In particular, during the first day of the seminar Rayisa Yevtushenko, Chief Specialist of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, presented informative report devoted to current problems of history teaching in secondary schools of Ukraine in 2015-2016 academic year. Igor Shchupak described theoretical and practical aspects of teaching World War II and the Holocaust history during today’s ideological war against Ukraine. Oleg Surovtsev, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor of Department of History of Ukraine of Chernivtsi National University and Vasyl Fedorak, Methodologist of Chernivtsi Regional Institute of Advances Teacher Training, devoted their reports to multiculturalism and the history of Bukovina and Chernivtsi as well as educational and methodological work in a multicultural environment of Bukovina.

During the seminar teachers had opportunity to participate in the opening of the 18 Meeting of the Ukrainian-Polish Committee of Experts on the Improvement of School Textbooks on History and Geography (you can find more details on this event in this issue), as well as reports and presentations, accompanied by open discussions. At the end the “round table” dedicated to the exchange of experiences in educational work in a multicultural environment was conducted.

Participants were also greatly impressed by cultural program and visits to Chernivtsi National University (the building is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List), tours of Chernivtsi and Khotyn fortress.

“It was very useful, very interesting and not just informative, but also emotionally intense. The fact that “Tkuma” Institute holds similar seminars in different cities of Ukraine, combining them with major international events, enabling teachers to delve deeper into the context of modern scientific community as well as professional debates and discussions and opportunity to expand our world view makes these meetings extremely important form of professional development”

On August 18, 2015 in Dnipropetrovsk Regional Institute of Advanced Teacher Training (DRIATT) conducted traditional August meetings for heads of district and city methodological unions of History, Law and Social Studies teachers dedicated to the beginning of the new school year. Dr Igor Shchupak, "Tkuma" Institute and Museum Director, participated in the meeting.
