"Tkuma" ("Revival") Ukrainian Institute for Holocaust Studies is the first national center for Holocaust history education. The history of “Tkuma” Institute creation goes back to 1999. At that time “Tkuma” Scholarly-Educational Center (“Revival”) was registered.
“Tkuma” Ukrainian Institute for Holocaust Studies GOALS:
- Forming of the leading research center for the Holocaust studies in Ukraine.
- Creation of advanced educational-methodological center for teachers.
- Further development of educational system on Jewish history and the Holocaust problem.
- Organization of inter-national, inter-religious, inter-confessional dialogue.
“Tkuma” Ukrainian Institute for Holocaust Studies FIELDS OF ACTIVITY:
- research programs;
- educational programs and activity;
- publishing of scientific, educational and methodological literature on Ukrainian Jewish history and the Holocaust.
"Tkuma" Institute conducts international scholarly conferences and methodological seminars on the Holocaust history and problems of international relations in cooperation with Ukrainian scientific institutions, as well as with its partners from Belarus, Canada, Israel, Moldova, Germany, Poland, Russia, the USA, etc. "Tkuma" Institute releases monographs, scholarly journal "Holocaust Studies", collections of documents and articles, albums of photos within the framework of academic series "Ukrainian Library of the Holocaust".
The most important “Tkuma” Institute research topic is the phenomenon of Righteous Among the Nations, who were saving Jews from Nazi genocide, risking their own lives and the lives of their families. Studying the mechanism of the Nazi “final solution of Jewish question” in occupied Ukraine, problems of international relations during the Second World War, resistance to the Nazi genocide, etc. hold important place in “Tkuma” Institute research work.
“Tkuma” Institute has a great experience of educational work with teachers, pupils and students. Each year "Tkuma" Institute conducts at least 5 big all-Ukrainian seminars for History teachers in different regions of Ukraine. In cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and regional institutes of advanced teacher training "Tkuma" Institute initiated special system of seminars for teachers. "Tkuma" Institute staff creates educational programs, textbooks, interesting multimedia manuals on the Holocaust history for schools. School History textbooks by I. Shchupak, "Tkuma" Institute Director, won All-Ukrainian State Competitions and were recommended by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. They were released in 700,000 copies. "Tkuma" Institute staff participates in Ukrainian-Polish Inter-State Committee on History teaching and Textbook Creation, new Ukrainian-German Commission, cooperates with Council of Europe, Ukrainian and foreign unions of history and social sciences teachers.
"Tkuma" Institute implements projects on inter-ethnic and inter-religious tolerance. The most popular among them are: International Inter-Religious Youth Seminar "The Ark" (Lviv region), "inter-religious dialogues" (Dnipropetrovsk, Chernivtsi, Zaporizhzhya, Kyiv, etc.) in cooperation with different religious communities.
The main direction of "Tkuma" Institute and Dnipropetrovsk Jewish Community work is development of Museum "Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine" (Dnipropetrovsk), opened in October 2012 in the biggest multi-functional community Complex "Menorah". "The Holocaust" Hall is in the central place of the Museum showing such topics as Nazi genocide and resistance to the Holocaust, collaboration and Ukrainian Righteous among the Nations. Works of artists and designers, unique exhibits, the latest audio-visual, multimedia equipment and technologies, education programs for visitors of the Museum ensure its special place in Europe.
