On January 23-25, “Tkuma” Institute, with the support of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, held an All-Ukrainian scientific and practical seminar for history teachers in Lviv, dedicated to the International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The lessons of World War II help to understand the essence of Russia's current aggression against Ukraine; and the “classic” example of genocide – the Holocaust – provides a methodological basis for understanding the modern genocide against the Ukrainian people.
Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Social Science Education of LOIPPO Kostiantyn Bakhanov (Lviv), Head of the Educational Department of “Tkuma” Institute Iryna Piskaryova (Dnipro), Dr. Igor Shchupak (Dnipro) gave welcoming words at the opening of the seminar. And during the educational event itself, a rich program awaited the participants: reports by scientists on topical problems of the history of the Holocaust, lessons from World War II and problems of modern history education, practical classes, and discussions.
Among the reports that were heard as part of the seminar were, in particular, the following: “World War II and the modern Russian-Ukrainian war; The Holocaust and the Genocide of the Ukrainian People: Issues of Comparative Analysis” (Dr. Igor Shchupak); “”Like a drop of water...”: understanding the Holocaust through the prism of microhistory” (deputy director of “Tkuma” Institute, deputy director of scientific work of Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine” Dr. Yehor Vradiy; “World War II and the Holocaust in history textbooks” (senior teacher of the department of social science education of LOIPPO Iryna Vasylkiv); “The ideology of destruction (on the material of world history): methodological aspects of the study” (Prof. Kostiantyn Bakhanov); “Mandyk Hasman, Hersh Keller and Olena Viter in the struggle for the independence of Ukraine” (staff of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance, Dr. Lesya Bondaruk); “Holocaust in official documentary and oral history documents” (deputy director for scientific and methodological work of the State Archive of the Vinnytsia region, Dr. Faina Vynokurova).
As part of the seminar, a meeting was also held with history teachers and methodologists of the Lviv region, during which the participants discussed the issue of updating historical material in modern history textbooks.
