On May 16, the annual scientific and practical conference “Zaporizhzhia Jewish Readings-2024” was held in a hybrid format – live and online – organized by “Tkuma” Institute and the Zaporizhzhia National University with the support of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.
The rector of the Zaporizhzhia National University, doctor of historical sciences, professor of the department of ancient and modern history of Ukraine and methods of teaching history of ZNU Mykola Frolov, dean of the history faculty of ZNU Dr. Olga Maklyuk, vice-rector for scientific work of ZNU prof. Hennadiy Vasylchuk, Dr. Igor Shchupak.
Then the conference continued its work in the format of sections – “History and historical memory” (moderator – acting head of the department of source studies and public communications of ZNU, Dr. Serhiy Bilivnenko) and “Philosophy and Philology” (moderator – head of the department of Ukrainian literature ZNU Nataliya Horbach).
The participants of the scientific event gave presentations on topical issues of the history of the Jewish people, the Holocaust, and World War II. Among them, in particular, the following: “Blood libel” in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe of the XVII-XVIII centuries: common and different” (Prof. Volodymyr Milchev), “Holocaust in psychiatric hospitals: the case of the Igren Hospital” (Dr. Albert Wenger), “Personal measurements of the Holocaust on the territory of the Zaporizhzhia region in the research of the NGO “Gulyapil Antiquities”” (Serhii Zvilinsky), “The Holocaust in Melitopol region according to declassified documents of the Soviet special services” (Valery Stoychev), “Memories about the Holocaust in the records of the expeditions of the Zaporizhzhia Scientific Society” (Dr. Serhiy Bilivnenko), “Representation of the Holocaust in the comics of Ukrainian authors” (Dr. Natalia Horbach), “The novel “Journey of Tsilka” by H. Morris: the theme of the Holocaust in the genre mode of mass literature” (Dr. Yulia Kurilova), “Problems of researching the history of Ukrainian saviors of Jews during the Holocaust in the context of the modern Russian-Ukrainian war” (Dr. Igor Shchupak) and others.
“I am once again impressed by the attention paid to our already 26th Readings by the leaders, teachers and students of my native ZNU, said Dr. Shchupak. – Warm words were spoken by the most dynamic and creative rector in Ukraine, Mykola Frolov; greetings – from the vice-rector of ZNU Hennadiy Vasylchuk; from the dean of the Faculty of History Olga Makliuk; from Dr. Serhiy Bilovnenko and others. Professor Volodymyr Milchev, Dr. Nataliya Horbach, and many other teachers, graduate students, and students gave excellent, deeply scientific, and at the same time relevant speeches.”
