On November 14–16, the All-Ukrainian Scientific and Practical Seminar for History Teachers and Methodists was held in Rivne, organized by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and “Tkuma” Ukrainian Institute for Holocaust Studies. The event became a platform for discussing topical issues of reforming history education, as well as the issues of the Holocaust as an important component of national and world history.
The opening of the seminar was addressed by educators and scientists: Professor of the Department of Social Studies Education of the Lviv Regional Institute of Postgraduate Pedagogical Education Kostyantyn Bakhanov; Chief Specialist of the Directorate of School Education of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, Honored Worker of Education of Ukraine Raisa Yevtushenko; Director of the Rivne Regional Institute of Postgraduate Pedagogical Education Dr. Alla Cherniy; Director of “Tkuma” Institute Dr. Igor Shchupak.
На учасників науково-практичного заходу чекала насичена триденна програма:
- lecture-discussion by Dr. Igor Shchupak “Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky – organizer of the rescue of Jews during the Holocaust”, which highlighted the moral aspects of assistance during the Holocaust;
- lecture-discussion by Prof. Konstantin Bakhanov “Study of cultural and historical traditions of everyday life in extreme conditions in a specialized secondary school”;
- report by Associate Professor of the Department of Teaching Methods and Educational Content of the Rivne Regional Institute of Postgraduate Pedagogical Education Petro Dolganov “Microhistory of the Holocaust in Western Volyn: Scientific Studies, Representation, Memory”, which emphasized the importance of local history, and presentation of his new monograph “Life and Death of the Jewish Community of Zdolbuniv”;
- presentation of educational publications for teachers from the Ukrainian Educational Publishing Center “Orion”;
- practical classes-excursions to places of remembrance in Radyvylov, which provided participants with the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the scale and consequences of the Holocaust for local communities.
The seminar also included a discussion of the prospects for implementing new approaches to teaching history in schools and a presentation of the results of the 21st International Contest “Lessons of War and Holocaust – Lessons of Tolerance”, which “Tkuma” Institute held in September this year.
