PRESENTATION OF “TKUMA” INSTITUTE PUBLICATIONS  IN COOPERATION WITH THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND SCIENCE OF UKRAINE

During February 01-03, 2017 Dnipro hosted all-Ukrainian seminar for young history teachers “Relevancy of Historical Material on WWII and the Holocaust in Ukrainian Textbooks”, organized by “Tkuma” Ukrainian Institute for Holocaust Studies and Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine”. The event gathered young teachers of history from 17 regions of Ukraine.

The seminar was opened by Iryna Piskariova, “Tkuma” Institute educational programs coordinator, and Dr. Faina Vynokurova, deputy director of scientific and methodological work of State Archive of Vinnytsya Region, who stressed the importance of involving young history teachers to participate in such educational events aimed at improving their skills and presenting new methods of teaching the Holocaust history.

Program of the seminar included:

- guided tour through Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine” exhibition conducted by Dr. Iegor Vradii, head of research department;

- museum and educational lesson on working with archival materials and museum funds;

- opening of exhibition “The Ukrainian Jewish Family Album”, organized by “Centropa” Institute;

- practical session on the use of educational posters during history lessons, conducted by Victoria Andrievska, UN Communications Officer;

- lecture by Prof. Kostiantyn Bakhanov Principles of Documentary Material Selection for WWII and the Holocaust Topic”;

- practical lessons on work with historical sources covering the Holocaust history, conducted by Dr. Faina Vynokurova;

- theatrical performance “Alone with God” based on the diaries of Janusz Korczak, organized by European drama theater “Dzvin”).

Dr. Igor Shchupak, “Tkuma” Institute and the Holocaust Museum director, delivered two lectures and discussions dedicated to the features of covering the Holocaust and World War II history in modern school history textbooks.

Within the framework of the seminar the round table was conducted allowing teachers to share their experience of teaching the Holocaust and World War II. The discussion was moderated by Iryna Piskariova and Dr.Taras Pylypovych, history teacher of Rivne upper secondary school “Harmony”.
