During 2016 within “Tkuma” Institute project “Marathons of the Living” history teachers from all over Ukraine conducted commemorative lessons dedicated primarily to the 75th anniversary of Babyn Yar tragedy.
History teacher Halina Kopylova conducted two commemorative sessions “There is no somebody else’s pain” with pupils and teachers of four schools of Syevyerodonetsk. More than 50 participants learnt about tragic events that took place in Babyn Yar on September 29–30, 1941 and came to understanding the importance of Holocaust research and preservation. The sessions also included presentation of publications focusing on the Holocaust and World War II and the Holocaust history.
At the initiative of Svitlana Shklyayeva Odesa specialized school #35 hosted practical sessions “Family History – Country History”. Senior school pupils learnt how to work with historical sources – official documents, memoirs, photos, and using such material created a wall of memory dedicated to the fate of their relatives during the Second World War.
Similar sessions for pupils of 8–9 forms of secondary school #111 of Kryvyi Rih were organized by Zhanna Babenko. Specially for the day of liberation of city from the Nazis they created “Wall of Memory” using family photos of WWI. The session was also joined by Igor Yermolenko and pupils of 5–6 forms. Through the research of photos and documents in the family archives, the fate of relatives during the Nazi occupation students learnt to understand the events of the war.
Iryna Piskariova, “Tkuma” Institute Educational Programs Coordinator, held classes on the Holocaust and Babyn Yar for pupils of Skhidnytska secondary school (Lviv region). She described the peculiarities of the “final solution of Jewish question” in Ukraine and drew attention of pupils to examples of mutual aid provided by representatives of different nationalities during the war.
