On February 26-28, 2016 Dnipropetrovsk hosted “Dnipro Open 2016” Debate Tournament carries out by “New Vision” NGO in partnership with “Tkuma” Ukrainian Institute for Holocaust Studies since 2019.
The project is designed for pupils and students and strengthens democratic values through interaction, collaboration and solving social problems. Traditionally the topics of Dnipropetrovsk open tournaments are associated with different aspects of democracy and human rights; such knowledge is certainly very important for every citizen. Within the project participants got acquainted with the international debate formats, improved their knowledge of democratic values, human rights and freedoms and learned how to interact effectively through the debate.
This year 28 teams from Dnipropetrovsk, Cherkasy, Kyiv, Zaporizhzhya, Berdyansk, Kryvyi Rih participated in the Tournament. Participants had the opportunity to participate in various workshops on debate formats, judging criteria, constructing arguments, etc.
During the first day, the first workshop and “round table” for teachers on “Discussion and Debate as a Way to Form Tolerance and Civic Position of Young People” were conducted. The “round table” was joined by Lyudmyla Davlyetova, “New Vision” NGO trainer (Dnipropetrovsk); Olena Zarichna, “Teachers for Democracy and Partnership” CO trainer (Ternopil); Olena Zyma, “New Vision” NGO trainer (Dnipropetrovsk); Svitlana Kadyrova, “Moloda Hvardiya” methodologist (Odesa); Maryna Masyutina, director of the Center of Children and Youth (Berdyansk), Volodymyr Skvorets, Doctor of Philosophical Sciences of Zaporizhzhya National University (Zaporizhzhya), Dr. Igor Shchupak, “Tkuma” Ukrainian Institute for Holocaust Studies and Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine” Director; as well as teachers from Cherkasy, Kyiv, Kryvyi Rih, Zaporizhzhya, Dnipropetrovsk.
During the “round table” participants got acquainted with the possibilities of the use of “debate” educational technology during the lessons, discussed at the approaches to patriotic education and formation of pupils’ civic position. During the event participants exchanged experience and presented the best practices for usage of debate technologies for development of critical thinking skills, constructing convincing argument, for public speaking, oral and written language, effective communication and understanding.
Illya Zhushman, Diana Demeter and Katya Trotsenko representing team “MYST” (city lyceum #12, Dnipropetrovsk) became the winners of Debate Tournament in World Format of school debates. Congratulations to the winners!
