On November 1, the director of “Tkuma” Institute, Dr. Igor Shchupak, held an educational meeting with students and teaching staff of the Yuriy Lypa Ukrainian Heritage School in Toronto (Canada).
Thanks to the organizational support of the school principal, Ms. Oksana Sokolyk, an educational lesson was held dedicated to the modern Russian-Ukrainian war and its reflection in Ukrainian history textbooks. School students have long been using textbooks from the Ukrainian Educational Publishing Center "Orion" and historical atlases created with the participation of the leading Ukrainian cartographer Iryna Rudenko. These educational materials are used not only in Canada, but also in many Ukrainian schools in Bulgaria, Estonia, Poland, Slovakia, the USA and other countries.
Special gratitude was expressed to the colleagues-co-authors of the “Orion” textbooks: Olena Burlaka, Natalia Vlasova, Vitaliy Dribnytsia, Oleksandr Zheliba, Vlad Kronhaus, Iryna Piskareva, Dmytro Sekyrinsky and others, whose efforts contribute to the dissemination of Ukrainian historical heritage in the world.
During the meeting, the figure of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky, to whom the international conference in Toronto was dedicated, was also mentioned.
After the presentation of book gifts from Ukraine to students and teachers, a difficult conversation about modern war began. The situation of Ukrainian children, who were forced to leave their homes and, in some cases, lose their relatives due to Russian military aggression, was particularly painful.
“The children asked difficult questions: Why did Russia attack Ukraine? When will peace come? Will we all die if this is a world war? Imagine how to communicate on these topics so as not to traumatize the minds of young Ukrainians, - noted Dr. Shchupak. - But what adds to the optimism is the fact that these children love Ukraine and want to know how they can help it. There are children who talk about their dream of returning to their homeland after the war. And there are talented teachers, wonderful specialists and patriots of Ukraine who work, who preserve the Ukrainian identity among the youth of the diaspora”.
