“Tkuma” Ukrainian Institute for Holocaust Studies tool part in the International Book Fest “Book Space”. The event was organized in Dnipro for the first time under the initiative of Dnipropetrovsk Regional State Administration. It lasted September 28-30.
Within the section “Literature for education”, “Tkuma” Institute conducted round table “New generation textbooks and their multimedia perspectives”. During this session Chief Specialist of the Department of General Secondary and Preschool Education of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine Raisa Yevtushenko, head of the educational department of “Tkuma” Institute Iryna Piskariova, winner of the contest “Teacher of the Year” Olena Burlaka, Dr. Igor Shchupak together with educators and public discussed the problems of reforming school education and the challenges authors of new textbooks on history face that today. Brilliant presentation of new editions of “Istorychna Pravda” was conducted by historian, journalist, publicist Oleksandr Zinchenko.
Presentation of Ukrainian translation of the book “The Ukrainian Night: An Intimate History of Revolution” by Marci Shore, historian, professor of intellectual history of Europe at Yale University (Connecticut, USA), was very interesting. The discussion was moderated by Ukrainian and American historian, one of the leading specialists in the history of Eastern Europe, Professor of Ukrainian History at Harvard University, director of the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute Serhii Plokhii.
Together with Dr. Vasyl Pavlov, Dr. Yehor Vradii and Dr. Igor Shchupak round table was held on myths and facts about the Second World War and the Holocaust. Participants talked about historical memory and its influence on the present. Vasyl Pavlov brilliantly highlighted the problems of publishing literature and teaching of militaristic history. Dr. Shchupak offered the audience the main concepts of the Soviet-Russian model of memory of the Second World War – “Quasi-religion “Great Patriotic War”. There were many participants, many questions, and a sharp debate. The most active participants received “Tkuma” Institute publications as a gift.
