On September 06, 2018 “Tkuma” Ukrainian Institute welcomed presentation of the book “The Anti-Imperial Choice: The Making of the Ukrainian Jew” by Prof. Yohanan Petrovsky-Shtern (Kyiv: Krytyka, 2018).
The book, which was published in English in 2009 in Yale University Press, was awarded the Prize of the American Association of Ukrainian Studies. The example of the life and work of Hrytsko Kernerenko, Ivan Kulyk, Raisa Troianker, Leonid Pervomaisky and Moisei Fishbein – five writers of the last century, who grew mainly in the Yiddish-speaking and Russian-speaking environment, but eventually came to Ukrainian literature, the author considered the linguistic and cultural choices that are opposite to the customs of Jewish integration, the imperial assimilation vector and the traditional choice in favor of self-preservation.
Presentation of the edition, conducted by the author itself, caused a considerable interest and a lively discussion of the topic among those present. At the end of the event, everyone was able to get a copy of the publication with the signature of the author.
