During September 24–29, 2016 Kyiv hosted International project dedicated to the 75th anniversary of Babyn Yar tragedy. Large-scale events were organized by Ukrainian Jewish Encounter in cooperation with “Tkuma” Ukrainian Institute for Holocaust Studies, Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine”, Holocaust Studies in Ukraine Project from Promoting Tolerance and other educational and research institutions from around the world.
On September 24 at Ukrainskyi Dim International Youth Project “Babyn Yar: Memory and Modern World” was opened. The program was organized by Dr. Igor Shchupak, “Tkuma” Ukrainian Institute for Holocaust Studies and Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine” Director. About 250 young people from Ukraine, the USA, Israel, and Europe became the participants. They joined the guided tour around Kyiv (including visit to Babyn Yar); integration training with participation of Jewish ATO soldier Asher Cherkasky, Chechen heroes of the battalion named after Dzhokhar Dudayev – Adam Osmayev and Amina Okuyeva; trainings conducted by Liudmyla Kozina, “Tkuma” Institute Deputy Director and psychologist; “Guardians of Remembrance” film screening and discussion with its director Boris Maftsir (Israel).
On September 25 “Tkuma” Institute organized brilliant lectures and presentations of Prof. Yaroslav Hrytsak, Dr. Iegor Vradii, Dr. Volodymyr Holovko, Dr. Vladimir Barbashov (Russia), Dr. Tamara Bakka and Dr Tetiana Meleshchenko, Prof. Wolf Moskovich (Israel), Dr. Larysa Denysenko, Peter Zalmayev (USA), Dr. Igor Shchupak, dedicated to historical memory about the Holocaust and the history of Jewish people; Final event of the Contest “Lessons of War and Holocaust – Lessons of Tolerance”; “Shimon’s Return” film screening and discussion with its author – historian rescued from the Nazis by Poles and Ukrainians.
September 26 Public Symposium was opened. The event gathered scholars from Ukraine, Estonia, Israel, Canada, the Netherlands, German, Poland, the USA, and France. The Symposium was organized by Dr. Ludmyla Hrynevych. During this day organizers also conducted opening of “Tkuma” Institute exhibition “Lessons of War and Holocaust – Lessons of Tolerance”, “Babyn Yar” Triptych by Vasyl Ovchynnykov and exhibition of National Museum of Ukraine During World War II; and presentation of theatrical performances “Valiza”, performed by “Nash Teatr”.
September 27 several significant events were held:
- presentation of the book “Babyn Yar: History and Memory”;
- panel discussion “Babyn Yar in its Accounts”;
- panel discussion “Babyn Yar in Literary Representations”;
- panel discussion “Babyn Yar in Cinema, Music and the Arts”.
Among the lecturers within framework of symposium there were: Yale University Professor Timothy Snyder (USA), Prof. Philippe de Lara (France), Prof. Norman Naimark (USA), Prof. Karel Berkhoff (The Netherlands), Dr. Kiril Feferman (Israel), Dr. Andreas Umland (Germany), Dr. Igor Shchupak (Dnipro), Dr. Volodymyr Viatrovych (Kyiv) and others.
On September 28 International project started with presentation of the architectural projects dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the Babyn Yar tragedy (moderated by Dr.Vitalii Nakhmanovych). After the presentation participants joined address by Prof. Norman Naimark “Genocide on World History”, and interactive lectures by Dr. Faina Vynokurova, Prof. Oleksii Honcharenko, Prof. Philippe de Lara (France), Anna Medvedovska, Dr. Krzysztof Persak (Poland). On the same day, the youth project participants attended commemoration concert (moderator – Pavlo Hunka) dedicated to the anniversary of the Babyn Yar tragedy and got opportunity to talk to the musicians.
The project was closed on September 29. On this day, the participants had a meeting with the famous poet and writer Serhiy Zhadan as well as joined lectures and presentations by scholars and public figures: Dr. Oleksandr Maievskyi, Semen Gluzman, Dr. Dmytro Haynetdinov, Timoti Rabinek (Poland), Dr. Oleksandr Pasternak.
