PRESENTATION OF “TKUMA” INSTITUTE PUBLICATIONS  IN COOPERATION WITH THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND SCIENCE OF UKRAINE

On January 27-28, pedagogical seminar dedicated to the International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, for history teachers and educators from all over Ukraine, was held. The seminar provided for the exchange of experience in teaching the World War II and the Holocaust history; discussion of the possibilities of using educational potential of these topics and problems of teaching the World War II and the Holocaust history during the current war against Ukraine.

The seminar program was quite diverse and included many activities.

During the theoretical part, Dr. Faina Vynokurova, Deputy Director of the State Archives of Vinnytsia region, leading source-study expert in the Holocaust in Ukraine, acquainted participants with the method of work with historical sources. Dr. Igor Shchupak, “Tkuma” Institute and Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine” Director, author of textbooks on World History and the History of Ukraine, spoke about the current problems of textbook creation and presented his own, not yet published, textbook on the History of the Middle Ages for the 7th grade, as well as multimedia textbook “World History. 11th Grade” released by “Tkuma” Institute together with TM “Rozumnyky” based on the textbook by Igor Shchupak.

Participants, who prepared presentations of their work in advance, demonstrated excellent examples of methodological developments and ideas for the use of educational potential of genocide studies.
Master class by Svitlana Adashkevych and Halyna Korsunova, leaders of the fine art group of Nadyezhdivsky EC of Kryvyi Rih district of Dnipropetrovsk region, became absolutely new kind of work at “Tkuma” Institute seminars. They demonstrated the possibility of studying the Holocaust through the arts and crafts. Together with other participants of the workshop Mrs. Adashkevych and Mrs. Korsunova made “reeled doll” and molded compositions of salt dough.

As part of the seminar teachers became the participants of the Memorial Ceremony to the International Holocaust Remembrance Day and grand opening the exhibition “Nazi German Death Camp Konzentrationslager Auschwitz”, developed by the Polish State Museum Auschwitz-Birkenau, and then participated in a round table “Totalitarianism, the Holocaust and Modern war”.

Iryna Piskariova, “Tkuma” Institute and the Museum Educational Programs Coordinator, took care of the evening program for teachers and in the end of the first day of the seminar the participants watched the play “Children of Golem” (based on the play by Victoria Orti). Youth Theatre “Little Stage” previously performed this play at the House of Creative Work and Art Center “Kvartira” and at the invitation of Iryna Piskariova agreed to play it in Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine” for the participants of seminar .

At the end of seminar teachers participated in the meeting of the Dniprovsky Historical Club where presentation and discussion of the film “Kholodnyi Yar” was conducted.
