On June 25-29, 2018 Chornomorsk (Odesa region) hosted ХХ Meeting of the Ukrainian-Polish Committee of Experts on the Improvement of School Textbooks on History and Geography.

This year’s meeting was dedicated to the interethnic and interstate contradictions after the end World War I that will lead to a new large-scale conflict – World War II, as well as humanitarian catastrophes – the Holocaust, forced deportations, etc.

The Polish part of the committee was represented by Marek Kornat, Extraordinary Professor and head of the Department of History of Diplomacy and Totalitarian Systems at the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Head of the Department of History of International Relations at Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University, Doctor Habilitowany (Committee co-chairman); Małgorzata Skórka, Chief Specialist of International Cooperation Department of the Ministry of National Education of Poland (Committee secretary); Marek Barwiński, Extraordinary Professor of University of Lodz, Doctor Habilitowany; Piotr Krol, scholarly secretary of University of Warsaw Institute of History, Doctor of History; Grzegorz Motyka, Director of the Institute of Political Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Professor, Doctor Habilitowany.

Ukrainian side was represented by Stanislaw Kulchytsky, Head of the Department of the Institute of History of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor (Committee co-chairman); Raisa Yevtushenko, Chief Specialist of Department of Educational Content, Language Policy and Education of National Minorities of Department of General Secondary and Preschool Education of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine (Committee secretary); Natalia Bieskova, Head of Department of Educational Content, Language Policy and Education of National Minorities of Department of General Secondary and Preschool Education of the MESU; Iegor Vradii, Read of Research Department of “Tkuma” Ukrainian Institute for Holocaust Studies and Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine”, Candidate of Historical Sciences; Ihor Hyrych, Head of the Department of M. Hrushevskyi Institute Ukrainian Archaeography and Source Study, Doctor of Historical Sciences; Ivan Patryliak, Dean of the Faculty of History T. Shevchenko Kyiv National University, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor; Volodymyr Poltorak, Associate Professor of I. Mechnikov Odesa National University, Candidate of Historical Sciences; Igor Shchupak, director of “Tkuma” Ukrainian Institute for Holocaust Studies and Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine”, Candidate of Historical Sciences.

Traditionally, on the initiative of “Tkuma” Institute and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, Ukrainian teachers - participants of “Tkuma” Institute Summer School - had the opportunity to meet and talk to well-known Ukrainian and Polish scholars.

As a result, members of the Committee signed a joint protocol describing recommendations to the authors of textbooks on the aspects of the common history of the Polish and Ukrainian peoples and other ethnic groups living in the Polish and Ukrainian territories.

The next meeting will be held in June 2019 in Poland.
