Projects for Teachers

During August 14–17, Zhovkva (Lviv region) hosted Summer Studies for history teachers and methodologists, organized by “Tkuma” Institute with the support of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. Educators from different parts of Ukraine gathered together in search of answers to the challenges of teaching history in Ukraine under conditions of war and “solid digitalization”.

At the opening of the event, the Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Social Science Education of the Lviv Institute of the Postgraduate Pedagogical Education Kostyantyn Bakhanov (Lviv), senior lecturer of the Department of Social Science Education of the Lviv Institute of the Postgraduate Pedagogical Education Iryna Vasylkiv (Lviv), the head of the educational department of “Tkuma” Institute Iryna Piskariova, Dr. Igor Shchupak.

A rich educational program was waiting for the studio participants, which included lectures-discussions and practical classes, round tables and excursions. Historians and philologists, scientists and teachers together discussed methodological aspects of teaching the history of World War II and the Holocaust in the conditions of the Russian-Ukrainian war (prof. Kostiantyn Bakhanov), the use of computer games in the study of the history of World War II and the Holocaust (Andriy Dimitrov, Danylo Osadets , Dr. Igor Shchupak), multimedia content in the process of studying the history of the Holocaust in the conditions of mixed/distance learning (Alina Dyachenko, Oleg Rudy), life hacks for working with historical maps (Iryna Vasylkiv) and other relevant issues.

The excursion program was no less interesting and informative: educators had the opportunity to get acquainted with the history of Zhovkva and its Jewish heritage, learn the secrets of Zhovkva Castle and Krekhiv Monastery.

History teacher Alina Denisova (Dobropillya, Donetsk region) shared her impressions of participation in the Summer Studies: “There was a pleasant aftertaste from the Summer Studios, because it seems that everyone went home with a certain task of their own. Everyone got something interesting for themselves. Everyone understood how he could be useful. What were they talking about? About the fact that history is quite the /best/ dynamic discipline. And yes, it is impossible to change history. But to change the model, approaches and accents - completely. Moreover, this is a necessary step. Not only a rejection of Soviet narratives, but also a conscious rethinking of the history of Ukraine against the background of the World. And fundamentally new teaching. For another generation. Yake no longer reads longreads, but perceives information differently. And no, it's not good, not bad, it's just a fact that needs to be reckoned with”.
