On April 14, 2016 on the base of Zaporizhzhya National University pedagogical seminar for History teachers was organized and conducted by “Tkuma” Ukrainian Institute for Holocaust Studies, Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine” in cooperation with Zaporizhzhya Regional Institute of Advanced Teacher Training.

The topic of the seminar was “Methodology, Visual and Technical Tools in Teaching World War II and the Holocaust History”. Within the framework of the educational event Dr. Igor Shchupak, “Tkuma” Institute and the Holocaust Museum Director, and Iryna Piskariova, “Tkuma” Institute Educational Programs Coordinator, met History teachers and discussed with them modern approaches to teaching the Holocaust history and usage of multimedia tools during the lessons.

Dr. Igor Shchupak presented his new textbook on the history of Middle Ages for pupils of the 7th grade and talked about main aspects of teaching history. “First of all, I tried to explain that it is impossible to teach history in Ukrainian school in such way as it was during the Soviet time or in a way our north neighbor proposes. The most important it is to give schoolchildren those values we rely on. The value of human life, but not the glory of some dictator. The value of human freedoms but not the interest of state that suppresses those freedoms. Moreover, I wanted to show that the welfare is where there is a freedom. And otherwise, if we don’t have freedom, and the history proves this fact, a state will suffer from a terrible crisis” – stated the historian.

At the end of the seminar participants received educational sets with methodological literature.
