The International Scientific Conference ‘National Minorities of Soviet Ukraine in the Holodomor Era: Losses, Trauma, Memory” was held online on December 14-16. The organizers of the scientific event are Holodomor Research and Education Center in Ukraine (HREC), “Tkuma” Institute, Ptoukha Institute for Demography and Social Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Holodomor Research and Education Consortium and the German-Ukrainian Historical Commission.

Bohdan Klid, Director of Holodomor Research and Education Center in Ukraine (HREC) at the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada.

Well-known scholars made introductory remarks at the opening of the conference: Oleh Volovina (Center for Slavic Studies, Eurasia and Eastern Europe, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, USA); Liudmyla Hrynevych (Institute of History of Ukraine, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, HREC in Ukraine, Kyiv, Ukraine); Anton Drobovych (Ukrainian Institute of National Memory, Kyiv, Ukraine); Frank Sysyn (Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies, Holodomor Research and Education Center (HREC), Petro Jacyk Center for the Study of Ukrainian History, Toronto, Canada).

The director of “Tkuma” Institute and Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine”, Dr. Igor Shchupak, was invited to participate in the event. He delivered a report entitled “Jews and Ukrainians in the Holodomor Era: Neighbors, Activists, Criminals, Rescuers, Witnesses and Victims”. During the speech, the memories of representatives of different nationalities about mutual rescue during the Holodomor and the Holocaust were analyzed.
