Projects for Teachers

On May 15, an international seminar for Polish and Ukrainian history teachers was held online, organized by “Tkuma” Institute and the International Center for Education on Auschwitz and the Holocaust of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum – one of the leading centers for studying and preserving the memory of the Holocaust and the crimes of the Nazi regime.

The participants of the educational event had the opportunity to exchange experience in the methodology of teaching the Holocaust and World War II history, to discuss issues related to the peculiarities of preserving the memory of those events in the conditions of the modern war between Russia and Ukraine. The head of the educational department of “Tkuma” Institute Iryna Piskariova and Dr. Igor Shchupak presented the activities of the Institute in the scientific, educational and methodological, publishing spheres, talked about international projects on the study of the history of the Holocaust, in which teachers, schoolchildren and students have the opportunity to participate.

As part of the seminar, Dr. Shchupak gave a speech on World War II and the Holocaust in Ukrainian history education under the conditions of the Russian-Ukrainian war. Dr. Denys Shatalov (Dnipropetrovsk region) together with local historian Tetyana Fedoriv (Ternopil region) held an interactive presentation “Remembrance of the Holocaust in the public space of a Ukrainian city: the example of Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, Zbarazh”.

Finally, teachers from Ukraine and Poland took part in the discussion “How we talk about “our” “other people's” tragedies” and talked about their experience in teaching complex topics of our past.

We believe that the next international seminar will take place offline.
