THE CONFERENCE “KORCHAK STUDIES: EDUCATION-THROUGH-LITERATURE”

 

On May 26-28th, 2008 Tkuma Center has welcomed over 220 participants (i.e. teachers, librarians, educators, literature specialists, public) on the high-level and large-scale event, devoted to the 130-date of birth of prominent pedagogue Yanush Korchak.

The Conference “Korchak Studies: Education-Through-Literature” has been signified by the wisely arranged academic sessions and practical workshops, well-delivered lectures and comprehensive reports on Korchak cultural and historical heritage.

The special emphasis has been put on Korchak’s contribution to the unique personality and his teaching methods, which are based on tolerant principles and humanistic values. 

Teachers from different cities of Ukraine presented newly developed methods of organization classes devoted to Y. Korchak: teachers from Krivoi Rog told their firsthand experiences in Korchak Readings conduction for senior students, teachers from Dnepropetrovsk have demonstrated presentation about Art Studios for younger students based on perception of Y. Korchak life and heritage and showed art works made by 9-10 year old children.

One of the most emotional events was presentation of mini-exposition devoted to J. Korchak’s life and work. The exposition has been arranged by Maryna Mykhailova, 9th grade student of secondary school from Radionivka village located in Krivoy Rog area. Marina’s teacher has presented and given to Tkuma Center set of made of clay statuettes devoted to Korchak’s life, heroes and plots from his literature works: King Matiush on the horse and in the car, Korchak with children, etc.

During round table discussion the Conference participants have reached a conclusion that it’s our mission to implement Y. Korchak’s inheritance and ideas profound studying in schools’ and Universities’ curriculum.
