INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON HOLOCAUST IN UKRAINE
IN FRANCE
On October 1st-3rd
2007 in Paris at Sorbonne University the International Scholary Conference “The
Holocaust in Ukraine: New Resources and Perspectives” has been conducted by
Center de Documentation Juive Contemporaine Memorial de
la Shoah – Yahad-In Unum and
Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies United States Holocaust Memorial Museum,
USA.
Such high-level conference, devoted to Holocaust issues in Ukraine, has
been conducted in Europe for the first time.
One of the main Conference organizers and inspirers Patrick Desbois
(France), prominent Roman Catholic Church figure, the Shoah in Ukraine
researcher, signified the Conference by his absorbing lectures and
sharing-the-unique-experience sessions.
The key lecture “Holocaust in Ukraine: State of Investigation” has been
delivered by the recognized scholar Dieter Pohl (Institute of Contemporary
History, Munich, Germany).
The Conference has been marked by the capturing reports of the authoritative
researchers who determine the development of contemporary Holocaust
historiography, i.e. Vadim AltskanKarel
Berkhoff (International Archives programs of US
Holocaust Memorial Museum, USA), Omer Bartov (Brown University, USA), (Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies in Amsterdam, the
Netherlands), Zvi Y. Gitelman (University of Michigan, USA), Martin Dean (Center
for Advanced Holocaust Studies of US Holocaust Memorial Museum, USA), Wendy
Lower (Ludwig-Maximilian-University of Munich, Germany, whose article has been published in the latest Tkuma Scholary Journal
“Holocaust Studies #4), Kiril Feferman (Herbrew University of Jerusalem,
Israel), Markus Eikel (International Criminal Court in the Hague, the
Netherlands), etc.
Ukrainian researchers have actively participated in the Conference
proceedings, delivering interesting and relevant reports. Aleksandr Kruglov
(Tkuma All-Ukrainian Academic Board, National Radio-electronic University,
Kharkov) has introduced new data and figures concerning Jews extermination in
Ukraine based on German sources and other archive materials. The lecture by
Anatoliy Podolskiy (Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies, Kiev) was devoted
to collaboration in Ukraine during Holocaust: aspects of historiography and
investigations. Viktoria Sukovataja (Kharkov National University) suggested her
view of Holocaust history teaching problems and perspectives in contemporary
Ukraine. Mikhail Tiaglyi (Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies, Kiev) has presented
very substantial report about Nazi policy, “Jewish question” and Gipsy’s destiny
in 1941-1944. The report became a good example of comparative analysis of Jews’,
Gipsy’s and other nations’ tragedies.
Igor Shchupak
has analyzed forms, methods and directions of Nazi anti-Semitic propaganda among
local population on the occupied territories of Ukraine, and made video
presentation of Tkuma Center activity that has attracted audience’s attention.
During the “Round Table” discussion brilliant speech has been given by
Vladislav Grynevich (National Academy of Sciences, Kyiv) who expressed his
ideas regarding some points of West European colleagues’ reports.
