INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON HOLOCAUST IN UKRAINE IN FRANCE

On October 1st-3rd 2007 in Paris at Sorbonne University the International Scholary Conference “The Holocaust in Ukraine: New Resources and Perspectives” has been conducted by Center de Documentation Juive Contemporaine Memorial de la Shoah – Yahad-In Unum and Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, USA.

Such high-level conference, devoted to Holocaust issues in Ukraine, has been conducted in Europe for the first time.

One of the main Conference organizers and inspirers Patrick Desbois (France), prominent Roman Catholic Church figure, the Shoah in Ukraine researcher, signified the Conference by his absorbing lectures and sharing-the-unique-experience sessions.

The key lecture “Holocaust in Ukraine: State of Investigation” has been delivered by the recognized scholar Dieter Pohl (Institute of Contemporary History, Munich, Germany).

The Conference has been marked by the capturing reports of the authoritative researchers who determine the development of contemporary Holocaust historiography, i.e. Vadim AltskanKarel Berkhoff (International Archives programs of US Holocaust Memorial Museum, USA), Omer Bartov (Brown University, USA), (Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies in Amsterdam, the Netherlands), Zvi Y. Gitelman (University of Michigan, USA), Martin Dean (Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies of US Holocaust Memorial Museum, USA), Wendy Lower (Ludwig-Maximilian-University of Munich, Germany, whose article has been  published in the latest Tkuma Scholary Journal “Holocaust Studies #4), Kiril Feferman (Herbrew University of Jerusalem, Israel), Markus Eikel (International Criminal Court in the Hague, the Netherlands), etc.

Ukrainian researchers have actively participated in the Conference proceedings, delivering interesting and relevant reports. Aleksandr Kruglov (Tkuma All-Ukrainian Academic Board, National Radio-electronic University, Kharkov) has introduced new data and figures concerning Jews extermination in Ukraine based on German sources and other archive materials. The lecture by Anatoliy Podolskiy (Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies, Kiev) was devoted to collaboration in Ukraine during Holocaust: aspects of historiography and investigations. Viktoria Sukovataja (Kharkov National University) suggested her view of Holocaust history teaching problems and perspectives in contemporary Ukraine. Mikhail Tiaglyi (Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies, Kiev) has presented very substantial report about Nazi policy, “Jewish question” and Gipsy’s destiny in 1941-1944. The report became a good example of comparative analysis of Jews’, Gipsy’s and other nations’ tragedies. Igor Shchupak has analyzed forms, methods and directions of Nazi anti-Semitic propaganda among local population on the occupied territories of Ukraine, and made video presentation of Tkuma Center activity that has attracted audience’s attention.

During the “Round Table” discussion brilliant speech has been given by Vladislav Grynevich (National Academy of Sciences, Kyiv) who expressed his ideas regarding some points of West European colleagues’ reports.
