Rememberence Ceremony
Devoted to the Holocaust Day
On April 16th,
2007 “Tkuma” (“Renascence”) All-Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies has
conducted remembrance activities devoted to the Holocaust Day, which
commemorates six million Jews, exterminated by Nazis during WWII.
Holocaust Day is
commemorated on 27th day of Nisan month according to the Jewish
calendar. On this day in 1943 there have been the revolt in Warsaw ghetto which
nowadays considered as a symbol of Jews’ resistance.
On April 19, 1943 German
military units using artillery and armored cars has commenced the ghetto
destruction and its inhabitants extermination. During five weeks ghetto
defenders had been putting up heroic resistance to outnumbered and armed enemy
forces. Warsaw ghetto destruction has been finished on May 16th, 1943.
“Interreligious Tolerance
and Mutual Understanding”for Jewish and
NonJewish Schools’ Students in Dnipropetrovsk
Every nation celebrates not
only national holidays, but also the religious ones, i.e. those which belong to
the certain religious community of the state.
Thus, there is a striving to
preserve and hand down the cultural and historical heritage across the
generations. Most people especially honor holiday rites, the point is that the
title “svyato” (holiday) originated from the notion “svyatist’” (which means
sanctity).
To turn national
peculiarities in multinational Ukrainian society into advantages, which
encourage cultural exchange and mutual enrichment, to foster the atmosphere of
heart-openness and mutual understanding through acquainting with culture,
history, customs and traditions of different nationalities– those are the
objectives Tkuma Center is being implemented via educational activity.
Yad Vashem is the world-famous international museum as well as the key scientific
educational institution on Holocaust History investigation. Tkuma Center is
working towards the developing of cooperation with Yad Vashem. On January, 2007
two centers have come to the agreement concerning interchange of materials
published in Yad Vashem and Tkuma Center. Henceforth, everyone can get acquainted
with the book novelties of both countries in Israel Institute and Ukrainian
Center libraries. Ephraim Kei, director of “International Seminars in English
and the Jewish World” in Yad Vashem, was so kind to present Tkuma Center some multimedia
materials which are of great use and importance for Ukrainian teachers.
On January 2007 Yad Vashem has conducted the Seminar. Tkuma Center has
been presented by its director
Igor Shchupak.
Immensely significant issues on Holocaust history, Philosophy, Theology,
Philology, etc. have been discussed during the seminar, which has been
facilitated by outstanding scholars Dr. Ephraim Kaye, (International Seminars in English and the Jewish World Director)
and Prof. David Ebstein (Desk for Programs for Jewish Educators). The event has
welcomed a lot of teachers including recognized Holocaust scholars Prof. David
Bankier, Prof. Menahem Milson, Prof. Yeduda Bauer and others.
On December 17, 2006 “Tkuma”

“Tkuma” in summer Jewish family camps
When a lot of people gather in one place, when they share
the interest in Jewish culture, history and tradition – this place becomes a
special one, especially when it is located at the
Black Sea
coast. Here, in the recreation center, not far from the Tarhankut cape (near
Chernomorskoye), not for the first time the summer Jewish family camps were organized
by Zaporozhye,
Dnepropetrovsk
and Lugansk Jewish Communities. “Tkuma” Center has friends and partners from various
Eastern cities of
Ukraine,
develops new interesting educational and cultural projects in various regions.
Therefore Tkuma staff couldn’t miss the opportunity of gathering 300 Jews and non-Jews,
who are not indifferent to the problems of preserving historical memory and
understanding the history lessons, problems of international relations and
tolerance. To these very topics dedicated were discussions and meetings held by
the director of
Tkuma Center Dr.
Igor Shchupak and its academic adviser Dr. Aharon Weiss.
3d in size Europe Jewish community is
located in
Ukraine.
Majority Ukrainian Jewish people are the residents of four biggest cities:
Kiev,
Kharkov,
Odessa and
Dnepropetrovsk.
In
Dnepropetrovsk, as in many Ukrainian cities, representatives of Jewish community and also
other nationalities and confessions gathered on July, 24th on the mass-meeting,
which was organized near Theatre of Opera and Ballet to express theirs opinion about
events in the
Middle East.
Trust towards each other rescues Tkuma polemical club meeting
If you regularly watch, listen, read
news you can’t be unimpressed by the number of alarming news about the cases of
violence because of nationality that take
place more often. What to say about the articles of numerous nationalistic
newspapers or internet sites? In such circumstances interethnic and
intercommunity dialogue is highly relevant. And though such dialogue within
Jewish organization is hard to arrange (most people have fear of the word “Jew”
in their hearts) this dialogue is of great importance.
International and inter confessional dialogue is highly important
background for the creation of the atmosphere of tolerance in Ukrainian
society. So Tkuma center with the assistance of its partners plans to hold educational
seminars for Jewish, Ukrainian and Polish youth.
Documenting and Perpetuation of Memory of Jews Perished During the Holocaust
Identifying the names of nearly 6
million Jews perished during Holocaust is acute scientific, public and national
problem. More than two millions names have still not been found, it is
estimated that over a million of the unidentified names are from
Ukraine.
Yad-Vashem started a very
important project “Documenting and Perpetuation of Memory of Jews Perished
During the Holocaust at the Occupied Territory of Former USSR”, the
presentation of which in Ukraine was organized by Embassy of Israel in Kiev on
April, 23 and Tkuma Center in Dnepropetrovsk on April, 27. Tkuma in cooperation
with JDC and other Jewish organizations plays the important role in
implementation of this project at the
territory of
Ukraine.
On March, 6 Mr. Jean-Pierre Froehli, the First
Secretary of German Embassy in
Ukraine
visited
TkumaCenter. Tkuma has been supporting
regular contacts with German Embassy, but it was the first visit of German
diplomat to
Dnepropetrovsk
office of Tkuma Central Ukrainian Holocaust Foundation.
On January 27, 2006 Tkuma
All-Ukrainian Academic Board held its regular meeting. Commemoration of
International Holocaust Memorial Day, coordination of Tkuma Center working plan
for 2006, as well as discussing the challenges of opposition to anti-Semitic
tendencies in Ukraine, the hotbed of which is infamous MAUP were the principal
issues on the Meeting agenda.
